ESR Meter

An ESR meter is a specialised instrument used to measure the Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) of a capacitor. It is one of the most valuable tools for electronics repair because it can quickly identify ageing or defective electrolytic capacitors, even when their capacitance still measures correctly. ESR meters are widely used for repairing audio amplifiers, televisions, computer power supplies, monitors, industrial equipment and switch-mode power supplies (SMPS).

What Is ESR?

Every real capacitor behaves as though a small resistor is connected in series with it. This internal resistance is called the Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR).

As electrolytic capacitors age, dry out or overheat, their ESR increases. High ESR causes poor filtering, excessive heating, voltage ripple and unreliable circuit operation.

Why Measure ESR?

  • Detect ageing electrolytic capacitors.
  • Find faulty power supply capacitors.
  • Diagnose intermittent faults.
  • Identify overheating components.
  • Test many capacitors without desoldering.
  • Reduce repair time.

How an ESR Meter Works

Most ESR meters apply a very small high-frequency AC test signal to the capacitor. At this frequency, the capacitor's reactance is very low, allowing the instrument to measure mainly the internal series resistance.

Because the test voltage is usually below the forward voltage of semiconductor junctions, many capacitors can be measured while they remain installed in the circuit.

Basic Measurement Procedure

  1. Disconnect the equipment from the power source.
  2. Discharge the capacitor completely.
  3. Connect the ESR meter probes across the capacitor.
  4. Read the ESR value displayed.
  5. Compare the reading with typical values or the manufacturer's specifications.

Typical ESR Values

Capacitor Typical Good ESR
1 µF Several ohms (depends on type).
10 µF 1–5 Ω
100 µF 0.2–1 Ω
470 µF 0.05–0.3 Ω
1000 µF 0.02–0.15 Ω
4700 µF Less than 0.05 Ω
10,000 µF Typically below 0.03 Ω

These values are approximate. The acceptable ESR depends on the capacitor's construction, voltage rating and intended application.

Interpreting the Results

ESR Reading Interpretation
Very Low Usually indicates a healthy capacitor.
Slightly Higher Than Expected Normal ageing may have occurred.
High ESR Capacitor performance has deteriorated.
Very High or Open Capacitor has likely failed.
Zero or Nearly Zero Possible short-circuit capacitor.

Testing In Circuit

One of the greatest advantages of an ESR meter is that many electrolytic capacitors can be tested without removing them from the printed circuit board.

However, components connected in parallel may affect the measurement. If a reading seems unusual, remove one lead of the capacitor or test it out of the circuit.

Common Applications

  • Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS).
  • Audio amplifiers.
  • Computer motherboards.
  • Televisions and monitors.
  • Battery chargers.
  • Industrial control equipment.
  • Automotive electronics.

Advantages of an ESR Meter

  • Fast testing.
  • Often works in circuit.
  • Detects faults missed by capacitance meters.
  • Excellent for troubleshooting intermittent problems.
  • Simple to use.

Limitations

  • Does not directly measure capacitance.
  • Parallel components can affect readings.
  • Cannot detect every capacitor fault.
  • Requires knowledge of typical ESR values for accurate interpretation.

Common Repair Symptoms

Equipment Possible High-ESR Symptoms
Audio Amplifier Hum, weak bass or distorted sound.
SMPS Failure to start or unstable output.
LCD Monitor Repeated restarting or blank screen.
Television Power cycling or no picture.
Motherboard Random crashes or boot failure.

Repair Tips

  • Always discharge large capacitors before testing.
  • Replace capacitors with unusually high ESR.
  • Use low-ESR replacements where originally specified.
  • Choose 105°C capacitors for power supply repairs.
  • Compare similar capacitors in the same circuit when diagnosing faults.

Key Points

  • An ESR meter measures the internal series resistance of a capacitor.
  • High ESR is one of the most common causes of power supply and amplifier failures.
  • Many capacitors can be tested without removing them from the PCB.
  • ESR testing is often more useful than capacitance testing for diagnosing ageing electrolytic capacitors.
  • Using an ESR meter can significantly reduce troubleshooting time.
