Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are polarised electrolytic capacitors that use tantalum metal as the anode and tantalum pentoxide as the dielectric. They are known for their high capacitance per unit volume, stable electrical characteristics and excellent long-term reliability. Because of their compact size, tantalum capacitors are widely used in portable electronics, computers, communication equipment and medical devices.

What Is a Tantalum Capacitor?

A tantalum capacitor stores electrical energy using a porous tantalum pellet covered with an extremely thin layer of tantalum pentoxide, which acts as the dielectric. A solid or liquid electrolyte forms the cathode connection.

The very thin dielectric allows a high capacitance to be achieved in a small physical package.

How Tantalum Capacitors Work

When a DC voltage is applied with the correct polarity, electrical charge is stored across the tantalum pentoxide dielectric.

Because the dielectric is extremely thin and has excellent insulating properties, tantalum capacitors achieve high capacitance values while remaining physically small.
