Trimmer Capacitors

Trimmer capacitors are small adjustable capacitors designed for the fine adjustment and calibration of electronic circuits. Unlike variable capacitors, which are intended for regular user adjustment, trimmer capacitors are normally adjusted only during manufacturing, servicing or equipment alignment. They are widely used in radio receivers, oscillators, RF amplifiers, frequency synthesizers and precision measuring equipment.

What Is a Trimmer Capacitor?

A trimmer capacitor is a miniature variable capacitor with a limited adjustment range. Its capacitance is adjusted using a screw or small tuning mechanism, allowing precise calibration of resonant circuits.

Once adjusted, the setting usually remains unchanged unless the equipment requires servicing or realignment.

How Trimmer Capacitors Work

Turning the adjustment screw changes the position of one electrode relative to the other, altering the effective plate overlap or spacing. This changes the capacitance by a small amount.

Because the adjustment range is relatively small, trimmer capacitors are ideal for precision circuit alignment rather than general tuning.
