Potentiometers come in different types depending on their construction, adjustment method, and application. Choosing the right type is important for performance and durability.

Types of Potentiometers

1. Rotary Potentiometer

  • Most common type
  • Operated by rotating a knob
  • Used in volume controls, tone controls

2. Linear (Slider) Potentiometer

  • Wiper moves in a straight line
  • Used in audio mixers and control panels
  • Provides precise adjustment

3. Trimmer Potentiometer

  • Small adjustable component (preset)
  • Adjusted using a screwdriver
  • Used for calibration inside circuits

4. Digital Potentiometer

  • Electronically controlled
  • No mechanical movement

5. Wirewound Potentiometer

  • Made using resistive wire
  • High power handling
  • Less smooth adjustment

6. Carbon Film Potentiometer

  • Uses carbon resistive track

7. Multi-turn Potentiometer

  • Requires multiple turns for full range
  • High precision control
