EI Transformers

An EI transformer is a traditional type of transformer that uses laminated steel cores shaped like the letters E and I. These laminations are stacked together to form the magnetic core. EI transformers are widely used due to their simplicity, low cost, and ease of manufacturing and repair.

What Is an EI Transformer?

The core of an EI transformer is built by stacking alternating E-shaped and I-shaped laminated sheets. These pieces interlock to form a closed magnetic path.

  • E laminations form the main structure
  • I laminations close the magnetic path
  • Windings are placed around the central limb

Construction

The construction of an EI transformer includes:

  • Core: Laminated silicon steel sheets (E & I)
  • Windings: Copper or aluminium coils
  • Bobbin: Plastic frame holding the windings
  • Insulation: Paper, tape, or varnish
  • Clamps: Hold laminations tightly together

The windings are usually placed on a bobbin and inserted into the core.

Working Principle

EI transformers operate on electromagnetic induction:

  • AC current flows through primary winding
  • Magnetic field is created in the core
  • Flux passes through E and I laminations
  • Voltage is induced in the secondary winding

  • Low manufacturing cost
  • Easy to design and produce

Disadvantages

  • Higher magnetic leakage compared to toroidal transformers
