Laminated Core

A laminated core is a type of transformer core made from thin sheets of magnetic material stacked together. These sheets are electrically insulated from each other to reduce eddy current losses and improve efficiency. Laminated cores are widely used in power transformers operating at low frequencies such as 50 Hz and 60 Hz.

What Is a Laminated Core?

Instead of using a solid block of metal, a laminated core is constructed from many thin layers (laminations) of silicon steel. Each layer is coated with insulation to prevent electrical currents from flowing between layers.

Why Laminations Are Needed

When a changing magnetic field is present, it induces currents inside the core material called eddy currents. These currents cause energy loss and heating.

Laminations break the path of these currents, greatly reducing losses.

By dividing the core into thin insulated layers:

  • Current paths are interrupted
  • Resistance to current flow increases
  • Energy loss is reduced

This results in higher efficiency and less heat generation.

  • Silicon steel (most common)
  • Cold-rolled grain-oriented steel (CRGO)
  • Low-loss magnetic alloys

Silicon is added to reduce hysteresis loss and improve magnetic properties.
