Transformers are tested to determine efficiency, losses, and performance without loading them fully. The two most important tests are:

  • Open-Circuit Test
  • Short-Circuit Test

1. Open-Circuit Test (No-Load Test)

This test measures core (iron) losses.

Setup

  • Primary connected to rated voltage
  • Secondary kept open
  • Measure voltage, current, and power

  • Current is very small
  • Power measured ≈ core loss

2. Short-Circuit Test

This test measures copper losses.

Setup

  • Secondary shorted
  • Low voltage applied to primary
  • Current adjusted to rated value

  • Voltage is low
  • Power measured ≈ copper loss

Example

  • Open-circuit power = 50W → Core loss
