A toroidal transformer is a type of transformer that uses a ring-shaped (donut-shaped) core. The windings are evenly distributed around the core, resulting in high efficiency, low electromagnetic interference, and compact size. These transformers are widely used in audio equipment, power supplies, and precision electronics.

What Is a Toroidal Transformer?

Unlike traditional laminated transformers, a toroidal transformer has a continuous circular core with no air gaps. The windings are wrapped around the entire ring.

Construction

Toroidal transformers are constructed using:

  • Core: Made from silicon steel or ferrite
  • Windings: Copper wire wrapped around the ring

The winding process is usually done using special machines due to the continuous loop structure.

Working Principle

Toroidal transformers operate on the same principle as other transformers:

  • AC current in primary creates magnetic field
  • Magnetic field circulates inside the ring core
  • Secondary winding receives induced voltage

The circular design ensures minimal magnetic leakage.
