Build a Stereo Headphone Amplifier

Many smartphones, computers and audio players cannot provide enough power to drive high-impedance headphones properly. A dedicated headphone amplifier delivers cleaner sound, greater volume and lower distortion while preserving the quality of the original recording. In this project you'll build a compact stereo headphone amplifier using the popular NE5532 operational amplifier.

Stereo Headphone Amplifier

Project Overview

A headphone amplifier increases the voltage and current of an audio signal so that it can drive headphones efficiently without introducing audible distortion or excessive noise.

The NE5532 is well suited for this application because it offers low noise, low distortion and excellent audio performance.

Project Difficulty

Item Value
Difficulty ⭐⭐ Intermediate
Build Time 2–4 Hours
Supply Voltage ±9 V to ±15 V DC
Channels Stereo
Soldering Recommended

Components Required

Quantity Component
1 NE5532 Dual Operational Amplifier
1 10 kΩ Stereo Potentiometer (Volume Control)
Several Metal-film Resistors
Several Film Capacitors (100 nF–1 µF)
2 100 nF Ceramic Capacitors (Supply Decoupling)
2 220 µF Electrolytic Capacitors (Output Coupling if required)
1 3.5 mm Stereo Input Jack
1 6.35 mm or 3.5 mm Headphone Output Jack
1 PCB

How the Circuit Works

The left and right audio channels enter through the volume control before being fed into the NE5532.

Each operational amplifier channel amplifies one stereo channel according to the feedback resistor network.

The amplified audio is then sent to the headphone output socket.

Supply decoupling capacitors help minimise noise and maintain stable operation.

Typical Headphone Impedances

Headphone Type Impedance
In-ear Earphones 16 Ω
Portable Headphones 32 Ω
Studio Headphones 80 Ω
Professional Monitoring Headphones 250 Ω
High-End Audiophile Headphones 300–600 Ω

Power Supply

The amplifier performs best with a dual power supply.

Supply Performance
±9 V Good
±12 V Excellent
±15 V Professional Quality

A virtual ground circuit can also be used when operating from a single DC supply.

Applications

  • Desktop headphone amplifiers.
  • Music players.
  • Audio interfaces.
  • Podcast monitoring.
  • Studio recording.
  • DIY Hi-Fi systems.
  • Bluetooth audio receivers.
  • Computer audio upgrades.

Testing

  1. Inspect all solder joints carefully.
  2. Verify the orientation of the NE5532.
  3. Measure the supply voltages.
  4. Connect an audio source.
  5. Turn the volume control to minimum.
  6. Connect the headphones.
  7. Gradually increase the volume while listening for clean audio.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause
No sound No power supply or incorrect wiring.
Hum Poor grounding or inadequate power supply filtering.
Distorted audio Input signal too high or clipping.
One channel silent Faulty wiring or defective potentiometer.
Oscillation Missing decoupling capacitors or poor PCB layout.

  • Add a bass boost switch.
  • Include a tone control stage.
  • Add a mute relay to eliminate switch-on clicks.
  • Use premium audio-grade capacitors.
  • Add Bluetooth audio input.
  • Include rechargeable battery operation.
  • Fit an aluminium enclosure for improved shielding.

Skills Learned

  • Operational amplifier circuits.
  • Stereo audio design.
  • Gain adjustment.
  • Volume control wiring.
  • Low-noise audio layout.
  • Headphone impedance considerations.

Safety Notes
