Advanced Audio Project

Build a Speaker Impedance Tester

A speaker impedance tester measures the electrical characteristics of loudspeakers over a range of frequencies. Unlike a standard multimeter, which measures only the DC resistance of the voice coil, an impedance tester reveals how the speaker's impedance changes with frequency. This instrument is invaluable for designing crossover networks, repairing loudspeakers, matching amplifiers to speaker systems and analysing enclosure performance.

Speaker Impedance Tester

Project Overview

The tester injects a low-level AC signal into the loudspeaker through a precision reference resistor.

By measuring the voltage across both the reference resistor and the speaker, the instrument calculates the speaker's impedance at each test frequency.

Advanced versions automatically sweep through hundreds of frequencies to generate a complete impedance curve.

How the Tester Works

A sine wave of known frequency is generated and applied to the loudspeaker through a precision resistor.

The voltage across the resistor determines the current flowing into the speaker.

The voltage across the loudspeaker is measured simultaneously.

Using Ohm's Law for AC circuits, the microcontroller calculates the impedance at that frequency. Repeating this process across many frequencies produces the complete impedance curve.

Typical Results

Speaker Typical DC Resistance Nominal Impedance
4 Ω 3.2–3.8 Ω 4 Ω
6 Ω 4.8–5.6 Ω 6 Ω
8 Ω 5.5–7.2 Ω 8 Ω
16 Ω 12–14 Ω 16 Ω

The DC resistance measured with a multimeter is always lower than the speaker's nominal impedance because impedance includes both resistance and reactance.
