Build a Zener Voltage Regulator
A Zener voltage regulator is one of the simplest methods of producing a stable DC voltage from a higher, unregulated supply. It uses a Zener diode operating in its reverse-breakdown region to maintain a nearly constant output voltage despite moderate changes in input voltage or load current. Although modern integrated voltage regulators are more efficient, Zener regulators remain important for reference voltages, low-current power supplies and educational electronics projects.
Project Overview
The circuit consists of a resistor connected in series with the supply and a Zener diode connected in reverse across the output.
The resistor limits the current flowing through the Zener diode, while the diode maintains a nearly constant output voltage equal to its rated Zener voltage.
As long as the Zener diode operates within its specified current range, the output voltage remains relatively stable.

The resistor limits current while the reverse-biased Zener diode regulates the output voltage.
How It Works
When the input voltage is below the Zener voltage, the diode conducts very little current.
As the input voltage rises above the Zener voltage, the diode enters its reverse-breakdown region and begins conducting current.
The Zener diode then maintains a nearly constant voltage across itself while the resistor absorbs the excess voltage.
Any increase in input voltage mainly results in increased current through the series resistor and Zener diode rather than a large increase in output voltage.
