Basic Electronics

Frequency

Frequency is one of the most important concepts in electronics. It describes how often a repeating event occurs every second. Frequency is used to describe AC electricity, sound waves, radio signals, digital clocks, oscillators and communication systems.

Frequency of an alternating waveform

What is Frequency?

Frequency is the number of complete cycles or repetitions that occur in one second.

For example, if an AC waveform completes 50 cycles every second, its frequency is 50 Hertz.

Frequency is represented by the symbol f.

Unit of Frequency

Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz), named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz.

Unit Symbol Equivalent
Hertz Hz 1 cycle per second
Kilohertz kHz 1,000 Hz
Megahertz MHz 1,000,000 Hz
Gigahertz GHz 1,000,000,000 Hz

Frequency and Period

The period is the time required to complete one full cycle.

Frequency and period are inversely related.

The higher the frequency, the shorter the period.

The lower the frequency, the longer the period.

For example:

  • 50 Hz โ†’ Period = 20 ms
  • 60 Hz โ†’ Period โ‰ˆ 16.67 ms
  • 1 kHz โ†’ Period = 1 ms
  • 1 MHz โ†’ Period = 1 ยตs

Examples of Frequency

Application Typical Frequency
Household electricity (many countries) 50 Hz
Household electricity (North America) 60 Hz
Audio signals 20 Hz โ€“ 20 kHz
FM Radio 88 โ€“ 108 MHz
Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz
Bluetooth 2.4 GHz
Microcontroller Clock 8โ€“240 MHz

Frequency in Electronics

Frequency is used throughout electronics.

  • Oscillators generate fixed frequencies.
  • Microcontrollers operate from clock frequencies.
  • Audio amplifiers reproduce audio frequencies.
  • Radio transmitters generate RF frequencies.
  • Switch-mode power supplies operate at high frequencies.
  • Digital circuits depend on clock frequency.

Measuring Frequency

Frequency can be measured using several instruments.

Instrument Application
Frequency Counter Direct frequency measurement
Oscilloscope Waveform and frequency measurement
Digital Multimeter Frequency function (selected models)
Spectrum Analyzer RF frequency analysis

Why Frequency Matters

The correct operating frequency is essential for electronic systems.

  • Audio quality depends on frequency response.
  • Radio communication depends on precise frequencies.
  • Motor speed can depend on AC frequency.
  • Digital processors rely on accurate clock signals.
  • Power supplies are designed for specific mains frequencies.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing frequency with voltage.
  • Mixing Hertz and RPM.
  • Assuming higher frequency always means higher power.
  • Ignoring unit conversions between Hz, kHz, MHz and GHz.
  • Confusing frequency with period.

Key Points

  • Frequency is the number of cycles per second.
  • The SI unit of frequency is the Hertz (Hz).
  • Frequency is represented by the symbol f.
  • Frequency and period are inversely related.
  • Electronic systems operate over an enormous range of frequencies.
  • Frequency is fundamental to AC circuits, communications and digital electronics.
