RMS Voltage (Root Mean Square)
Alternating current (AC) voltage is constantly changing, making it difficult to compare directly with direct current (DC). To solve this problem, engineers use the Root Mean Square (RMS) value, which represents the equivalent DC voltage that would produce the same heating effect in a resistor.
What is RMS Voltage?
RMS voltage is the effective value of an alternating voltage.
If an AC source and a DC source produce the same amount of heat in the same resistor, then their voltages are considered equal in RMS value.
For example, a household supply rated at 230 V AC means 230 volts RMS, not the peak voltage.
Why Do We Use RMS?
Because AC voltage changes continuously, its instantaneous value is always changing.
Using RMS allows engineers and technicians to calculate electrical power just as they would for DC circuits.
Most voltmeters and multimeters display RMS values when measuring AC voltage.
Relationship Between RMS and Peak Voltage
For a pure sine wave, RMS voltage is related to peak voltage by the following equations.
VRMS = VPeak รท โ2
or
VPeak = VRMS ร โ2
Since โ2 โ 1.414:
- VRMS = VPeak รท 1.414
- VPeak = VRMS ร 1.414
Example 1
A sine wave has a peak voltage of 100 V.
RMS voltage:
100 รท 1.414 = 70.7 V
Example 2
The household mains supply is 230 V RMS.
Peak voltage:
230 ร 1.414 โ 325 V
The instantaneous voltage therefore varies between +325 V and โ325 V during every cycle.
